What makes an adult sandbox different from a child sandbox?

#1 The presence of orgies.

#2 Adults must create their sandbox before playing in it.

Although the discussion of orgies is very important, this email will be about #2.

See, when you’re a kid you just wake up and play.

Everything’s ready to go. No assembly or responsibility required.

The problem is, you don't have much control.

You can't control how big your sandbox is, nor the caliber of toys you get to play with.

Your parents determine this.

As an adult, you must build your sandbox.

There's work involved. It's hard. You get banged up along the way.

This time around though, the possibilities are endless.

Burning Man is the ultimate example.

It's the world's greatest adult playground.

For DECADES in advance, you hustle to create the money & freedom required to disappear in the desert.

Months leading up, you get together with your friends to organize your setup.

You "front-load" all responsibility. It's preparation at its finest.

Then, once you arrive in the desert and set up camp, you forget everything.

You turn off your phone, drop your identity, and play.

You may be wondering the point of this email.

I was too, up until now.

The point of this email is to live your life like you're preparing for Burning Man.

Work hard, and then fuck off big time when it's time.

Either be building your sandbox or playing in it.

At all costs, avoid getting stuck in the middle.

Don't work while checking your phone like a distractable housefly.

You'll get less done and will feel guilty when you try to relax.

Left unchecked, you'll become a confused manchild with a sub-par playpen and hammydown toys.

(Yes I’m using playpen instead of sandbox now.)

Become binary. On or off.

This is easier said than done…

It's easy to fall into the purgatory of distraction.

This is why you must remain vigilant and check yourself. Always.

This concept is at the core of “Entrefláneur”.

“Entre” represents order in your life. The work. Building your playpen.

“Flâneur” represents the chaos. The letting go. Playing, as an adult.

It is not easy to master this dichotomy.

Worthy pursuit?

I think so.

LASTLY…

For you biohackers out there… great lil’ tutorial for removing ALL blue light from your iPhone. Night Shift on iPhone sucks. There’s still tons of blue light. (This tutorial works for Mac too).

1. Head to the Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Color Filters

2. Tap the enable switch, then pick Color Tint > move the intensity slider to the far right and hue to the far left for red which will eliminate ALL blue light. If your screen looks terrible, you have succeeded.

3. Create a triple-click shortcut for this. Go to back to Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut (at bottom) > then select Color Filters

4. You can now triple-click the side button on your phone to toggle this at any time. BOOM

P.S. If you are unaware of the sleep-disrupting effects of blue light on the eyes, you’re an uninformed, sickly plebeian and clearly do not listen to podcasts. Shame on you.
