assistant quest

5g of shrooms sent me on this quest

I’ve been diving deep into personal assistant hiring.

I didn’t think I needed an assistant until I ate 5g of shrooms back in Dec.

On that trip I saw the areas of my life that needed to be “tightened up”.

I also saw how much I was leaving on the table. I can do more and that requires help.

So I embarked on a quest to find an A-player assistant.

Here is my quest:

STEP 1: Create Job Post

I whipped up a job post and hosted it on Google Docs. Find it here. Use it as a template if you like.

STEP 2: Generate Leads

The next step was to get eyeballs on my post.

I did this in 3 ways:

  1. Warm network. I told my friends I was looking for an assistant and got some referrals.

  2. Facebook ads. I spent $100 and got 53 people to apply.

  3. Medellinismo. I paid $30 for this post and got some good applications.

STEP 3: Qualify leads

For the Facebook ads, I used lead forms to get as much lead flow as possible.

Step 1: Enter info

Step 2: Complete application

With $100 in ad spend, I got 192 people to complete step 1.

I followed up with those people via WhatsApp to make sure they completed step 2 (full application form).

192 leads (step 1) → 53 applicants (step 2).

The most important part of the application is the video submission:

I disqualify people if:

  • They don’t link the video properly (not good at following instructions)

  • The video is poor quality (poor attention to detail)

  • The applicant doesn’t have good English

  • The applicant doesn’t seem like someone I’d get along with

STEP 4: Interview & Test Tasks

I then do a super quick interview. If I like ‘em I’ll give test tasks.

The test tasks are actual things I need done. Example here.

Make sure you pay the applicants for their time.

STEP 5: Hiring

I then pull the trigger. After a week I know if the person is good.

My housemate Darryl likes to hire 3 at a time and holds a week-long tryout.

This is quite genius and I'll do this next if my current hire doesn't work out.

Luckily, we’re a week in and she’s crushing. Let’s go.

Cool things we found during our weekly internet stroll.

CeraVe had the best SuperBowl ad hands down. “I’m Michael Cera and I’m pleased to announce that this, is my cream.” 😂

Chat GPT will be able to remember your convos soon. Now you better be saying please at the end of each prompt.

Brilliant Labs set to release these AR glasses that make you look like Harry Potter. 🪄

Damn.
