spittin' straight fire

One of the sexiest things a person can do is speak clearly.

Masters of articulation command attention and respect. Fumblers and mumblers tend to get cast aside like a wet towel.

You deserve better than wet towel treatment. You are royalty and will be treated as such!

This is why you must be spitting fire, not fluff. This email will help you.

From my experience, speaking better comes down to 3 things:

  1. Reading long-form

  2. Writing

  3. Making videos

Let’s dive in…

1) Reading long-form

The more I read, the better communicator I become.

It has to be long-form though, not short tweets or captions.

It also can’t be an audiobook. The words must hit your eyeballs. Huberman can back me on this:

I feel more articulate after just a few good days of reading.

In contrast, I feel noticeably LESS articulate after a few days of heavy scrolling.

There’s something about the patience required to read a book that allows you to form better sentences.

This is why you should read long-form stuff whenever possible.

Quick hack to do this: next time you’re on the toilet, read a book instead of scrolling your default feed.

A few poops later, and you’ll prefer the book. When committed to, long-form reading is more gratifying than short hits of empty content.

2) Writing

Humberman’s tweet above also mentions that writing in complete sentences improves articulation.

I can 1000% vouch for this.

Writing complete sentences takes patience and discipline. This restraint is translated into better formation of spoken sentences.

So, try to write every day.

If you can’t find anything to write about, here are some ideas…

→ If you have kids, write them a manual containing all the tough lessons you’ve learned in life. This would be cool to have as a kid.

→ If you have a partner or spouse, write a book containing everything you appreciate about them. It’s a good gratitude exercise and will improve your relationship.

→ If you have a business, write a consumer guide to help potential customers make a more informed buying decision.

Notice how all these exercises are inherently useful. Improved writing and speaking is a byproduct.

This is how you get better at writing without feeling like you’re wasting time.

3) Making Videos

Few people talk about this, yet I find this EXTREMELY helpful.

Getting on camera forces you to articulate ideas while on the spot.

You don’t realize how bad you are on the spot until you press record.

For instance, I used to make screen capture videos and send them to businesses to try and sell them marketing services.

The first 100 videos were extremely painful. They’d require about 50 takes each and needed heavy post-production to make them presentable.

Now I can make a 10-minute explainer video in 1-take while hungover.

This skill has transferred into all areas of my speech:

  • Doing a sales call

  • Having a casual one-on-one conversation

  • Speaking in front of a group

  • Hosting an online webinar

So, if you want to get better at speaking, make videos.

To start, try sending Looms instead of emails.

Looms communicate more than an email and can often replace whole meetings.

So go forth! Sharpen your speech. Become dangerously articulate.

Do these simple things to speak better and watch your whole life improve.

See you next week ✌️

These two tweets can change your life.

Dad films as his son is swallowed and then spit out by a whale.

The UK is stepping into the humanoid robot arena. I’d still like to see a proper demo though.
